What Automotive Programs Require From a Molding Supplier

Automotive requirements vary by OEM, tier level, part function, market, material, and risk. The quality plan must therefore be based on the customer’s drawing, specifications, submission requirements, and customer-specific requirements—not on one generic automotive standard.

Repeatable Dimensions and Process Control

Part-to-part variation is managed through an approved process window, capable measurement methods, defined inspection frequency, control plans, reaction plans, and ongoing process monitoring appropriate to the program.

Customer-Specific PPAP Submission

The required PPAP submission level and elements are specified by the customer. Before quotation, we review which documents ABERY can prepare, which require customer input or external testing, and which format and approval route apply.

First-Article and Dimensional Verification

First-article, layout, capability, appearance, material, and testing reports are prepared according to the agreed drawing and submission plan. Report scope and sample quantity are defined for each project.

How We Support Automotive Mold and Molding Programs

Tooling Built to Agreed Requirements

Mold steel, hardness, cavity count, gate system, cooling, ejection, surface requirements, expected volume, and maintenance plan are defined according to the part and program. Machining and inspection tolerances are assigned by feature; they are not represented by one universal ±0.05 mm claim.
Tool-life targets are agreed with stated operating and maintenance conditions. Actual life depends on mold design, steel, hardness, resin, process, preventive maintenance, and repair history.

PPAP and Automotive Quality Documentation Support

ABERY can support agreed PPAP elements such as dimensional results, process flow, PFMEA, Control Plan, measurement-system records, capability results, material documentation, sample records, and Part Submission Warrant where applicable. The customer defines the submission level, templates, approval authority, and customer-specific requirements.
 
 

DFM and Moldflow Review Before Tool Release

DFM review can cover wall thickness, draft, ribs, bosses, undercuts, gate and ejection concepts, appearance risks, weld lines, venting, cooling, and foreseeable molding issues. Moldflow analysis is provided when technically appropriate and included in the agreed scope. Detailed recommendations require the correct part revision, resin grade, expected volume, and quality criteria.
 
 
 

Specified Automotive Materials and Traceability

Material is purchased to the customer-approved manufacturer, grade, color, additive, and specification. Available documentation may include supplier CoA or CoC, SDS, batch or lot records, drying records, and project traceability according to the agreed control plan. IMDS or third-party compliance data is supported only when explicitly confirmed and supported by the material supplier.

Interior and HVAC Components

Potential applications include console and trim housings, HVAC ducts and connectors, glove-box components, clips, covers, and interior structural parts. Appearance, odor, VOC, scratch, gloss, grain, color, and flammability requirements must be confirmed for each program.

Frequently Asked Questions About Automotive Injection Molding

  • Q What is your MOQ for automotive injection molded parts?

    A

    There is no single MOQ for every automotive program. Prototype and validation quantities depend on the tooling stage and sampling plan. Production MOQ and order frequency depend on resin purchasing, machine setup, cycle time, inspection, packaging, traceability, and annual volume. Send your forecast and delivery schedule so we can propose a practical production plan.


  • Q Can you handle tight tolerances on large automotive panels?

    A

    Tolerance capability must be reviewed feature by feature. Part size, resin shrinkage, glass or mineral content, wall thickness, gate location, warpage, mold temperature, process window, fixture, and measurement method all affect the result. We review the drawing and identify which tolerances can be controlled, measured, or may need design adjustment.

    For Class A or appearance-critical surfaces, provide the grain, gloss, color, sink, weld-line, flow-mark, scratch, waviness, and approved-sample requirements. Moldflow can help predict risk, but final acceptance depends on tooling, process development, measurement, and customer approval.


  • Q What automotive-grade materials can you process?

    A

    We process selected grades of PA6, PA66, reinforced nylon, POM, PC/ABS, filled PP, ABS, TPE, TPU, and other engineering polymers. Feasibility is confirmed using the exact resin manufacturer, grade, reinforcement, color, additive, drying requirement, recycled-content requirement, and customer specification. Material traceability documents are agreed by project.


  • Q Are you IATF 16949 certified?

    A

    No. ABERY is not currently certified to IATF 16949. Our quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015. For automotive programs, we can support selected customer-required quality documents and processes when they are reviewed and agreed in the project scope. Customers should confirm whether ISO 9001 certification and the proposed controls meet their supplier-qualification requirements.


  • Q Do you support PPAP submissions?

    A

    We can support the PPAP submission level and elements agreed with the customer. Before quotation, please provide the required submission level, customer-specific forms, drawing and specification revision, testing requirements, capability expectations, sample quantity, IMDS or material-data requirements, and approval route. We will confirm which items are included, which require customer input, and which require external testing.
