If you've spent any time searching for a mold manufacturer in China, you already know the problem isn't finding suppliers — it's finding the real ones. A search for "injection mold maker" or "mould factory" returns hundreds of listings, most with near-identical photos, the same "verified supplier" badges, and the same promises about quality and speed. Some of those companies own real factories with real machines. Others are trading companies that will happily take your deposit, outsource the tooling to a subcontractor you'll never meet, and disappear the moment something goes wrong.
This guide isn't a pitch for any one supplier. It's a practical, step-by-step way to vet any China-based injection mold company — including us — before you commit a deposit or your product drawings. If you follow it, you'll walk into your first call already knowing more than most buyers do.
Platforms like Alibaba, Made-in-China, and Global Sources all offer some form of "verified" or "gold supplier" status. These badges are useful as a starting filter, but they mostly confirm that a company paid for a membership tier and passed a basic business license check — not that the factory floor matches the photos on the listing, or that the machines shown are actually theirs.
It's common for trading companies to register a shell entity, get verified, and then broker orders to two or three actual manufacturers depending on price and capacity. That's not necessarily dishonest — plenty of legitimate trading companies add real value through project management and quality oversight — but if you think you're dealing with a factory and you're actually dealing with a broker three layers removed from the tooling shop, your ability to catch problems early, negotiate engineering changes, or escalate issues drops sharply.
The badge tells you a company exists. It doesn't tell you who's actually cutting your steel.
Here's a checklist you can run through in under an hour, mostly using free public tools.
1. Check the business registration against what they claim.
China's National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (国家企业信用信息公示系统, at gsxt.gov.cn) lists registered capital, business scope, and registration date for any legally registered company. Ask the supplier for their Chinese company name and unified social credit code, then look it up yourself. If a company claims to have been operating since 2009 but the registration shows 2021, that's worth asking about directly — it may simply mean they re-registered under a new entity, but you should hear their explanation rather than assume.
2. Cross-check factory size and headcount claims.
If a supplier says they operate a 10,000-square-meter facility with 100+ employees, ask for a video walkthrough on a live call — not a pre-recorded promotional video. A real production manager can walk you past the CNC room, the EDM/WEDM area, and the molding floor, and answer unscripted questions about what's running that day.
3. Verify ISO certificates directly with the issuing body.
An ISO 9001:2015 certificate should have a certificate number and an issuing/accreditation body. Most certification bodies (SGS, TÜV, BSI, and others) have an online search tool where you can enter the certificate number to confirm it's real and still valid. A supplier that can't or won't give you a checkable certificate number is a red flag, not a technicality.
4. Ask for equipment lists with brand and tonnage, not just "we have injection machines."
A legitimate mold shop can tell you how many CNC machines, EDM/wire-EDM machines, and injection molding machines they operate, along with tonnage ranges. Vague answers like "many advanced machines" without specifics usually mean the person you're talking to doesn't have direct access to the shop floor.
5. Ask who owns the patents or proprietary processes they advertise.
If a company lists patents on their website, ask for patent numbers. China's patent office (CNIPA) has a public search tool. This matters less for basic tooling and more when a supplier claims a proprietary process advantage — you want to know if that claim is real IP or marketing language.
6. Request a reference case with a checkable detail.
Ask for a project example with enough specificity that you could ask a follow-up question about it a year later — part type, rough production volume, and roughly when it happened. Vague "we've served Fortune 500 companies" claims without any specifics are hard to verify and easy to fabricate.
7. Test response time and technical depth on your first inquiry.
Send a real RFQ with a 3D file or drawing and see what comes back. A factory with real engineers will typically ask clarifying DFM (Design for Manufacturability) questions — about draft angles, wall thickness, or gate location — before quoting. A pure trading company more often just relays your file to a third party and forwards whatever quote comes back, sometimes with delays measured in days.

None of these signals alone is proof of dishonesty — some legitimate trading companies are transparent about their model and add genuine value. The problem is when a broker presents itself as a factory. Ask directly: "Do you manufacture this in-house, or do you subcontract it?" A trustworthy supplier will answer plainly.
Keep a short script handy. Here's a starting point:
"Can you share your company's unified social credit code so I can check your registration?"
"How many injection molding machines do you operate, and what tonnage range?"
"Who designs the mold — an in-house team, or is that outsourced?"
"What's your standard T1 sample process, and how many trial rounds are typical before approval?"
"If there's a problem after the mold ships, what's your process for corrective action?"
"Can I do a live video call with your production manager, not just sales?"
"What's your standard lead time for a mold in the [X]-cavity, [material] range, and what would make that longer?"
A supplier that answers these specifically and without hesitation is worth moving forward with. One that redirects, delays, or gives generic marketing answers is worth a second look before you commit.
