If you're importing an injection mold or plastic parts for the first time, the trade term on your quotation — FOB, EXW, or DDP — probably matters more to your actual budget than most buyers realize. Two suppliers can quote the exact same mold at very different headline prices, and the difference often isn't the mold itself — it's what each quote does and doesn't include once the mold leaves the factory floor.

This guide isn't trying to sell you freight forwarding services, and it isn't going to hand you specific duty rates or shipping timelines, because those numbers depend entirely on your destination country, your product's HS code, and current carrier conditions — figures that change often enough that any specific number I gave you here could be outdated or simply wrong for your situation. What I can give you is a clear, neutral framework for understanding what each trade term actually means, so you can ask your supplier and your freight forwarder the right questions and calculate your true landed cost with your eyes open.

Why the Trade Term on Your Quote Matters More Than the Sticker Price

A quotation price only means something once you know what it includes. The same mold priced at, say, a lower number under EXW terms and a higher number under DDP terms might represent the exact same total cost to you — the difference is simply where the supplier's responsibility ends and yours begins. Comparing quotes from different suppliers without checking which trade term each one used is one of the most common ways first-time buyers end up with a landed cost surprise.

The three terms most relevant to injection mold buyers are EXW, FOB, and DDP. They sit at different points on a spectrum of how much responsibility (and cost) the seller takes on versus the buyer.

EXW (Ex Works): Buyer Takes on the Most

Under EXW, the supplier's responsibility ends the moment the goods are made available at their factory or warehouse. Everything after that — loading the goods onto a truck, transporting them to the port, export customs clearance in the country of origin, ocean or air freight, import customs clearance, duties, and final delivery — is the buyer's responsibility to arrange and pay for.

EXW quotes tend to look like the lowest number on paper, which is exactly why they can be misleading for a first-time buyer who isn't used to arranging their own export logistics. If you go this route, you'll need either your own freight forwarder or one recommended by the supplier to handle pickup, export documentation, and everything downstream. EXW can make sense for experienced importers who already have a trusted logistics partner and want maximum control over the shipping process, but it generally isn't the easiest starting point for a first-time buyer.

FOB (Free on Board): A Common Middle Ground

Under FOB terms, the supplier handles getting the goods from their facility to the export port, clearing export customs, and loading them onto the vessel. Once the goods are on board the ship, responsibility — and risk — transfers to the buyer. From that point, the buyer (typically through their own freight forwarder) arranges and pays for ocean freight, marine insurance, import customs clearance in the destination country, duties, and final inland delivery.

FOB is one of the most common terms in international mold and parts sourcing because it splits responsibility at a clear, well-understood point: the supplier manages what they know best (their own country's export process), and the buyer manages what they know best (or hires a forwarder to manage) on the import side. If you're working with a freight forwarder in your own country already, FOB often gives you the best balance of cost control and manageable complexity.

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): Seller Takes on the Most

Under DDP, the supplier takes responsibility for essentially the entire journey — export clearance, international freight, import customs clearance, duty and tax payment, and final delivery to your door. The buyer's job is simply to receive the goods.

DDP is attractive to first-time buyers precisely because it removes the need to understand customs procedures in your own country. The tradeoff is that you're trusting your supplier (or their logistics partner) to correctly classify your goods, calculate the right duty amount, and handle your country's import paperwork — processes they may be less familiar with than your own customs broker would be. It's worth asking a supplier offering DDP how they handle customs clearance in your specific country and whether they've shipped there before, rather than assuming it works the same way everywhere.

How to Calculate Your True Landed Cost

Regardless of which term you're quoted, your true landed cost is the sum of everything it takes to get the mold or parts usable in your own facility — not just the invoice price. As a framework, work through these categories for whichever term you're comparing:

  • Product cost — the mold or parts price itself, as quoted

  • Inland transport in the origin country — covered by the supplier under FOB and DDP, buyer's responsibility under EXW

  • Export customs clearance — covered by the supplier under FOB and DDP, buyer's responsibility under EXW

  • International freight (ocean or air) — buyer's responsibility under EXW and FOB, covered by the supplier under DDP

  • Marine or cargo insurance — worth confirming explicitly regardless of term, since it isn't automatically included in every quote

  • Import duties and taxes — buyer's responsibility under EXW and FOB, covered by the supplier under DDP. The specific rate depends entirely on your destination country's customs classification for your product — this is determined by the HS (Harmonized System) code assigned to your goods, and it varies by country and by product category. We'd strongly recommend confirming your applicable HS code and duty rate with your customs broker or freight forwarder before finalizing a budget, rather than relying on a general estimate.

  • Import customs clearance and destination handling fees — buyer's responsibility under EXW and FOB, covered by the supplier under DDP

  • Final inland delivery to your facility — buyer's responsibility under EXW and FOB, covered by the supplier under DDP

Adding these up under each trade term, for the same shipment, is the only reliable way to compare quotes on an apples-to-apples basis.

Logistics Delays Have a Ripple Effect on Your Whole Project

Shipping and customs clearance is the other half of the delay picture, and it's worth understanding as a distinct risk category rather than assuming that once a mold or parts shipment leaves the factory, your timeline risk is over.

Ocean freight schedules can shift due to port congestion, vessel availability, or seasonal demand. Customs clearance can be held up by incomplete or inconsistent paperwork, a misclassified HS code, or a customs authority selecting a shipment for physical inspection — any of which can add unplanned time to a schedule that looked fine on paper. None of these delays are things a mold factory controls once goods have left its dock, which is exactly why it's worth asking your freight forwarder — not just your mold supplier — for a realistic transit and clearance estimate specific to your destination country and current conditions, rather than a generic industry figure. Timelines here vary enough by route, season, and country that any specific number would need to be confirmed with a forwarder who has current visibility into your particular lane.

Building in a buffer between your mold or parts arrival date and your actual production launch date is a simple, practical way to absorb this uncertainty without putting your launch schedule at risk.

How Overseas Support Offices Help Coordinate the Import Side

One thing that helps first-time buyers, particularly in Europe, Russia, and North America, is working with a supplier that has some local presence or support structure in your region rather than only a factory contact in China. The Bottom Line for First-Time Buyers

There's no single "best" trade term — the right choice depends on how much control you want over logistics versus how much complexity you're prepared to manage yourself. EXW gives you the most control and the most responsibility. DDP gives you the least responsibility but requires trust in your supplier's ability to navigate your country's import process. FOB sits in between and is often the most practical starting point if you already have or are willing to engage a freight forwarder in your own country.

Whichever term you choose, get specific written confirmation of your applicable HS code, estimated duty rate, and realistic transit timeline from your freight forwarder or customs broker before you finalize your budget — these numbers are specific to your product, your destination country, and current shipping conditions, and no supplier quote alone can responsibly tell you what they'll be.
