A mold fails mid-production, and the first question every buyer asks is: whose fault is this, and who pays to fix it? It's a fair question, and it's one that a surprising number of buyers can't answer with confidence — because it was never spelled out clearly before the order was placed.
This guide isn't going to tell you that every mold problem is automatically the supplier's responsibility. That would be dishonest, and it would set you up for a frustrating argument later when a legitimate boundary case comes up. Instead, this is about understanding how responsibility actually gets divided in practice, and what to put in writing before you place an order so that if something does go wrong, there's a clear answer instead of a dispute.
Mold failure isn't one category of problem. A mold that stops producing acceptable parts after 50,000 shots and a mold that cracks after 5,000 shots can have completely different root causes — and different causes point to different parties being responsible. Treating "the mold failed" as a single, simple event is exactly how disputes drag on, because both sides are often describing different problems without realizing it.
Before assigning blame, it helps to separate mold failure into three broad categories.
A design defect means the mold itself was engineered incorrectly — poor gate placement causing consistent warping, insufficient cooling channels leading to premature wear, or a core/cavity structure that wasn't built to handle the tonnage or cycle count the project required.
If the mold was designed by the supplier (or the supplier approved a design without flagging concerns), a failure traced back to design is generally the supplier's responsibility. This is precisely why a proper Design for Manufacturability (DFM) review before tooling starts matters so much — it's the stage where a competent engineering team catches problems before they become years of a mold underperforming in production.
At Abery, DFM optimization is provided free of charge before a mold is built. It's not a formality — it's the step that reduces the chance of a design-related dispute ever happening in the first place, because both sides sign off on the design intent before cutting steel begins.
This category covers failures that trace back to how the mold was actually built, independent of the design being sound. Using a lower-grade steel than specified, incorrect heat treatment, poor-quality EDM or CNC work, or skipped finishing steps can all cause a mold to wear out or fail well before it should — even if the design on paper was correct.
Failures in this category are also the supplier's responsibility, because the buyer paid for a specific steel grade and manufacturing process and has a reasonable expectation that it was actually used. This is why a written specification — steel grade, hardness, surface treatment — should be part of every tooling order, not left as a verbal understanding. Without a documented spec, "we used the material we said we would" becomes very hard to verify or dispute after the fact.
This is the category that gets left out of a lot of buyer-facing content, because it's less flattering to talk about — but leaving it out would make this guide dishonest. Not every mold problem originates at the factory.
Common examples include:
Running the mold at production parameters (injection pressure, temperature, cycle time) different from what it was validated for
Switching to a different resin or resin grade than the mold was originally designed and trialed for, without informing the supplier
Inadequate mold maintenance during long-term storage or between production runs
Physical damage from mishandling during shipping, installation, or removal from the press by the buyer's own production team or a third-party molder
When a failure traces back to one of these causes, it is reasonable for the supplier to decline responsibility — and a buyer who understands this going in is far better positioned to avoid the dispute altogether, simply by keeping the supplier informed before changing production conditions.
A verbal assurance that "we stand behind our molds" is not a warranty. A warranty is a written document that specifies, at minimum:
Coverage period. How long the warranty applies — whether tied to a calendar period, a shot count, or both.
What's covered. Language should be specific, such as "mold failure resulting from material defects or manufacturing process error," rather than a vague promise to "fix any problem."
What's excluded. A responsible warranty spells out exclusions clearly — for example, damage caused by the buyer altering production parameters outside the mold's validated range, using unapproved materials, or failing to follow the agreed maintenance schedule. A warranty with no exclusions listed at all is often a warning sign that the terms haven't been thought through, not a sign of an unusually generous supplier.
The remedy process. What happens when a claim is made — inspection process, who determines root cause, repair versus replacement, and expected turnaround time.

The point of stating this plainly is that a warranty is only useful to a buyer if its boundaries are clear before something goes wrong — not discovered during a dispute.
Regardless of which supplier you're working with, there are a small number of documents worth insisting on before tooling begins:
A written warranty document, not a sales page reference — one that states coverage period, scope, and exclusions explicitly.
A signed DFM confirmation sheet. Once the design review is complete, get written sign-off from both sides on the final design intent. This becomes the reference point if a design-related question ever comes up later.
A documented material specification, including steel grade and any special treatment, attached to the purchase order.
A clear escalation and inspection process for warranty claims — who inspects the mold, how root cause is determined, and what the timeline looks like.
None of this is adversarial. A supplier confident in their own process should have no hesitation putting these terms in writing, and a buyer who asks for them upfront is simply reducing ambiguity for both sides.
There is no version of this relationship where a supplier reasonably absorbs the cost of every mold problem regardless of cause — and any supplier who implies otherwise is either overpromising or hasn't thought through their own exposure. What a buyer should actually look for is a supplier who can clearly explain how they draw the line between their responsibility and yours, and who is willing to put that line in writing before the mold is built.
That clarity is what actually protects you. Not a vague promise that "we'll take care of it," but a written framework that tells you, before anything goes wrong, exactly what happens if it does.
